M Cafe Summer Menu

After seeing my article in angeleno magazine, I was invited to attend a private tasting for the new summer menu at M Cafe.

Philosophie Mama in Angeleno

I’d been to M Cafe several times before and LOVE it. Luckily, there’s a location in Beverly Hills walking distance from where I live! I went to the West Hollywood location on Melrose which was the original location.

M Cafe is great because they have a menu very similar to the way I eat anyway: macrobiotic and similar to pescitarian (minus the eggs, the diet is no dairy, no red meat, no poultry, high veggies, lots of fruit, some fish, no refined sugar & mostly gluten free)

All the food tastes so balanced and I always feel fulfilled when I leave.

My favorite dishes from the summer menu were:

Green Papaya, Mango & Sea Palm Salad

Green papaya, mango and sea palm salad

Zucchini “noodles” with Basil Almond Pesto

Zucchini Noodle Salad

The Chickpea chaat

Chickpea Chaat

The Curried Cauliflower Salad was yummy, too!

And I absolutely LOVED the watermelon juice!!! They also brought out a raw baby thai coconut and I think I drank the entire thing by myself 🙂 It’s like they knew I was coming and brought all my faves!

I can’t wait to go back and have these again and share the delicious food with my friends and family.

Thanks again, M CAFE!

so, today is Cinco de Mayo. Fittingly, I had 10 avocados and the babes were asleep so the only obvious thing to do would be: Create Avocado & Green Dream BREAD! It may not sound good but you will be … Continue reading

Move. Nourish. Believe. Sophie Jaffe- Sporty Sister of the Week

wanted to share this beautiful interview from the lovelies at Move Nourish Believe! If you’ve never checked out their blog, I highly recommend it!

Sporty Sister Of The Week: Sophie Jaffe

Sophie Jaffe BANNERAnother Friday, another influential Sporty Sister. This week, we would like to introduce to you… Sophie Jaffe from Philosophie. All the way from Sunny California, we have been so honoured to sit down and chat with Sophie. Not only does she live and breathe the Move, Nourish, Believe way of life, but she is a woman of many talents – (throw in being a wife, a mother AND working with various celebs) – this girl is invincible!

Sophie shares with us a little snippet of how she is living her best, most beautiful life.

MNB: Hi Sophie, welcome to our humble MNB! Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I am firstly, a mama. I have two babes- Kai, 2 1/2 and Leo, 8 months. They are my heart and soul. I am married to a brilliant man who has his doctorate in psychology and is helping the world change the way we look at addiction. I’ve always been a super active person, constantly on the move. Nothing puts me more at peace than playing with healthy, happy food in the kitchen. I’m {overly} optimistic and trusting and would do anything for anyone I love.

MNB: So, word in the blogosphere is you’ve worked with a few big celebrities through your business Philosophie! Tell us more…

Yeah! Word is right! I can’t reveal all the celebrities I’ve worked with but I can peep about a few!

“I worked with George Clooney and Stacy Keibler for over 8 months multiple times a week in George’s home as his personal chef. I did several cleanses for Stacy and 2 for George. They were super sweet and wonderful to me. They LOVE my superfoods!”

I also helped Gerard Butler cleanse on two separate occasions, delivering food to his house each morning and staying to do a private yoga session a few times during the 10 days. It was pretty intense. We did an activity where we stared into each other’s eyes for several minutes (his suggestion) and I must say, as “yogi” as I am, I smiled a few times (breaking code) and it was such a challenge to not burst into tears or laughter. It was such an insane moment in my life.

MNB: As a wife, mother of two AND business woman, how do you manage to stay on top of it all and always perform at your peak?

Without working out, getting sunshine and eating a superfood-dense diet, I absolutely wouldn’t be able to handle it all. It’s all about balance and completely about taking the BEST care of yourself so you can better take care of everyone else. I also couldn’t do half the things I do without a serious support system.

My parents & my sister luckily live locally so they help when they can with the kids and emotionally support everything I do. My friends are there for me to vent and let go with anytime I need, and without my husband I wouldn’t even still be doing Philosophie.

He is the backbone of support, doing all the “behind the scenes” not-so-fun stuff like anything to do with finances and helping me really focus on my goals. We keep each other on track and motivated to be the best people and parents we can possibly be.

MNB: Have you always been passionate about healthy living? What was the ‘uh ha’ moment for you…

When I was a teenager I definitely wasn’t conscious of what it meant to be healthy. When someone else is responsible for grocery shopping and putting food on the table, it makes you very passive. I grew up in a reasonably healthy home and our meals were usually organic and filled with love.

When I moved to LA to live with my dad and attended UCLA, I was walking around a farmers market in Hollywood and had my “aha” moment. I saw a sign that had a baby lamb and some ridiculous verbiage… And from that moment on I went mostly vegan. That lasted 7 years, until I became pregnant with my first son. I began craving & dreaming of eating meat… And I had my second “aha” moment: listen to your body and intuition; don’t put yourself in a box. Ever since then I’ve been focusing on nutrition and superfoods and less about which “box” I put myself in (gluten-free, vegan, etc.).

Sophie Jaffe

MNB: What does a typical day of MNB’ing [Move, Nourish, Believing] look like in your world?

  • Wake up: “believe”– set my intentions for the day. Don’t touch my phone or computer ’til intentions are set & kids are fed and loved.

  • Breakfast: “nourish”– a huge superfood smoothie with Green Dream, Cacao magic, Berry Bliss, or ALL 3, and/or “green eggs” with spinach and green dream. Everything is family sized!

  • After dropping off my son at school: go straight to the gym. No excuses. Best way to start the day–“move”!

  • Then I usually run around nonstop until I pick Kai back up in the early afternoon. Running into the office to ship orders, demo samples at the stores I sell in, meetings, etc. Drink tons of h2o and snack on healthy fuel throughout.

  • I end my day by doing something for my spirit. This could be journaling, going to hear Marianne Williamson speak, a meditation with my hubs, or just saying out loud what I’m grateful for. This is the last thing I do before I hit the bed, and it ensures I have the best night of sleep possible!

MNB: Okay, so if you had to choose…what would be your top 3 ‘can’t live without’ foods of all time!

For sure my Green Dream superfood powder (I keep it in my purse!), raw chocolate & zucchini! I add my Green Dream to EVERYTHING from muffins to smoothies to doughnuts. Raw chocolate keeps me sane (every day) and zucchini is super versatile. It can be grilled in the summer, added to a stir fry dish or sliced thinly into raw “pasta”! I sneak the Green Dream and zucchini into everything for my boys.

MNB: What does happiness look like to you?

Happiness to me is giggling uncontrollably, being around those I love, fresh juice and nature. Moving in my body in a free spirited way and being so overwhelmed with joy that I cry happy tears at least once by the end of the day. Happiness is being my truest, best self, being inspired and inspiring and most of all, shedding my light and joy to others so that they can find more light within their own lives.

MNB: What are some healthy snacks we could find stashed in your handbag?

I make my own bars with the superfood blends and my own raw chocolates (all recipes on the blog). So you’ll absolutely find a bar or two and a few chocolates (if I haven’t eaten them all). I usually have fresh fruit too; an apple, banana and clementine (that’s mandarin in Australia) are the easiest to grab and go! Nut butter or a trail mix is an easy thing to keep stashed in my car or purse as well and keeps my energy roaring for hours and hours. Oh and, so much water.

MNB: Best advice you have ever been given?

When I was 18 my mom taught me that I couldn’t do everything and that saying “no” was one of the most honest and humbling things I could say. It completely changed my life when I realized I had that magic word within me, which would empower me to be that much more powerful.

MNB: What are some of your best-kept beauty secrets?

Honestly, keep it simple. What you eat is really what shows up on your skin. I’m asked multiple times a day what I do/use for my face. I’m lucky if I have time to wash it at the end of the day. If I’m wearing makeup I remove it with a gentle cleanser, use a pad with tea tree oil all over my face, then use some witch hazel (which you can get at the pharmacy ) a few nights a week. I also slather coconut oil on my face where it’s dry. That’s it! Less is more. The less ingredients the better. Don’t over complicate things!

MNB: Any tips or advice you could give to our readers just starting on their healthy, active journey?

Start to keep a food journal. It’s the best way to get back on track when you fall off and the easiest way to get ON a healthy track by being more aware of what you put in your body. Keep it for at least 3 days then see where you can make some changes.

I’d also suggest to do a cleanse for a fresh start. Make sure it’s full of nutrients though so you don’t get hungry, that’s not the point. The point of a cleanse is to saturate your body with nutrients, not deprive it through starvation. If you want a lifestyle shift, I’d suggest my 14 day cleanse so you can learn some new ways to eat, superfood recipes, healthy tips and ideas.

The recipes are easy and approachable for ANYONE, even those who have never cooked before in their life.

Healthy “Magic” Black Bean Truffles

Healthy “Magic” Black Bean Truffles

Guest Post By Monica NelsonHealthy Black Bean Truffles

So by now, you must have heard of baking, making, and creating yummy treats using black beans as the main ingredient.  You may have even tried all of my Moni “Bean” Treats by now. If this is news to you though, boy are you are in for a treat! Here, right now…  today… I offer you something seriously irresistible. WARNING: You will not be able to  eat only one but that is okay because these are HEALTHY! (Yes, chocolate is always on my food list for antioxidants & superfoods. Just ask my clients!).
These treats are very unique, very tasty , and are actually are packed with good-for- you ingredients.  I present to you Healthy “Magic” Black Bean Truffles.
Healthy Black Bean Truffles
Not sold? Well imagine the “magic” of mixing black beans, with a lil’ banana, apple sauce, some peanut butter (or try my coconut oil version too!) and just a bit of maple syrup.  (This is just to only name a few too!) It gets better though. Read on.
Cacao Magic
Then I also add in a product I am absolutely in love with called Cacao Magic from Super Food “Magic” Maker-The Philosophie.com. This is a antioxidant superfood blend of ingredients such as organic cacao powder, organic chia seeds, and organic cacao nibs just to name a few. Cacao Magic packs 10x the antioxidants of green tea, more magnesium than 3 cups of broccoli and more calcium than a glass of milk.
Cacao Magic
Yep. It is that good and why else would it be called “Magic!” See why I use it in this recipe. It not only tastes amazing but it is a great addition to these truffles and a great way to sneak in more superfoods. NOTE: You do not AT ALL have to use Cacao Magic to make these AMAZING GOODIES but it really is great with this recipe and a great way to sneak in some superfoods!
Melting Chocolate!
So now imagine all of those yummy ingredients blended well together and adding one more little touch…Try to imagine dipping these balls of bliss into now melted chocolate. What you get is now a smooth, dark, blissful bite that shows no trace of the beans and you are also NOW are getting in antioxidants. Are you with me? Of course you are!
Healthy Black Bean Truffles
We all love truffles. We take our time with truffles. They are rich, decadent, and a must have. We love the first hard, bite when our teeth break into the hard chocolate shell. We love what the center then fills our mouths with that rich, irresistible, wonderful flavor and texture. Well expect just that with this recipe! The only thing you can except that is different with these truffles, is that they are much healthier and that you can get away with eating more than one!
There is more I want to tell you. You can make this in 2 different flavors. One can be a peanut butter filling and the other way that I also love can be a coconut flavor filling. You will want to only pick one version in a batch though and not both! Sometimes I like the peanut butter while others I love the coconut so I always rotate. Both versions are great and it really depends on what flavors you want more of. I say try making it both ways.
Black Bean Magic Truffles

NOTES: I recommend to taste the mixture before rolling it into balls to see if you want to add more sweet or salt.  (Keep in mind though, that if you use a semi-sweet chocolate for the coating, it will add a bit of extra sweetness to the truffles.)

Although I said you can get away with eating more than one, all you need is one or two. Try to not eat them all in the “making process” though because I fail every time!

15-18 Truffles

  • 1 cup cooked black beans, (rinse and drain if canned)
  • 1/3 of a banana
  • 2 tbs of apple sauce
  • 2 tbs peanut butter for pb version OR 2 tablespoons coconut oil (melted) for coconut  flavor BUT not both – pick one.
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 3 tbs of stevia
  • pinch of sea salt, always the trick to hide the beany taste
  • 2-3 tbs pure maple syrup, depending on your sweetness preference
  • 1  tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 tbs of Cacao Magic, optional. (You do not need this but I love it here and it is a great way to sneak in more superfood antioxidants. Plus it really tastes amazing.)
  • dash of cinnamon, optional. (I just like it on everything.)
  • 1 cup chopped semi-sweet chocolate or chocolate of choice (dark is great too or could do white chocolate also), for melting and coating
  • Optional add-ins: nuts, seeds, dried fruit, etc. can all work!

  1. Place the beans, banana, apple sauce, peanut butter (or coconut oil), cocoa powder, stevia, salt, maple syrup, vanilla extract, Cacao Magic (if using not neccesary but really great in this recipe!), and cinnamon (if using) all in a food processor. Blend everything until well combined, scraping down the sides if you need to. It should start to get thick and form together. (Best part is you can eat it RAW thanks to this recipe being vegan, but try not to!). NOTE: You do need to try that batter here and make sure you like it to your taste preference -(salt/sweet ratios).
  2. Cover a baking sheet covered with parchment paper coated with cooking spray so they do not stick. (I love coconut oil spray for this too). Next, use a spoon and roll about a tablespoon size piece into a ball and place on the a baking sheet lined with parchment. Place in the freezer for about 30 minutes. (Try hard to not eat them at this point, I fail everytime!).
  3. Meanwhile melt the chocolate in a double boiler (or microwave). When the balls have chilled pull out just about half (you want them to stay cold, so do them in batches). Next carefully insert a (toothpick works great) into the center and dip in the melted chocolate to coat. You can place a spoon underneath for back-up if it drops in the chocolate. Place on parchment paper. Then I lightly use my two fingers to slowly remove the toothpick.
  4. Let chill again so the chocolate coating sets. Can be anywhere from 15-30 mins. Store in the fridge (or freezer). Now Enjoy!

April Ab Challenge with Philosophie Mama!

Here’s the April Ab Challenge! My husband and I were just doing it on our own and we’ve gotten so many questions and interested people that I decided to start to post about it and share the love!

I can’t stress enough how important ones diet is in having flat abs. I’m asked all the time how my abs are so fit and flat and I can’t say it enough times: watch what you eat. See how it affects your body. Change what doesn’t feel right.

You could sit down and do thousands of situps and if you still eat unhealthy foods, you absolutely will not have a six-pack. I, be no means, have a six-pack but I am trying to take my fitness to the next level by fine-tuning my diet and focusing every single day on bringing energy to my core. I very rarely sit down and do ab exercises. Most of what I do is full body. I run, spin, jog, walk, stairs, cross-fit, insanity, yoga, Pilates and strength train with weights. I MAYBE do 15 minutes a WEEK generally on concentrated ab exercises. This is why I think it will be a difference on my body. And if not, we’ll know in 30 days! 🙂

A LOT of our physique is absolutely genetic and past a certain point can not be manipulated. But the MAJORITY (in my opinion) is what we eat and how we work our bodies. Develop strength and flexibility around your core (stomach/abs/back) and slow down. Work your entire body- arms, legs, back muscles and glutes, because THESE exercises strengthen the core.

If you have abdominal fat, no matter how much core strength though, you will not have abs, lines, obliques. You have to change your diet and increase your energy output. You need to burn off more calories than you eat to reduce the body fat. I haven’t tested my body fat for a long time Set realistic expectations. Be patient. Build up your core strength with full body exercises, strength training, cardio and to reduce body fat and feel good in your skin reduce salt, breads, soft drinks and junk. Every workout and ever clean meal is one step closer. It’s a goal. You have to plan on a slow and steady progression.

My 29th Birthday is on the 30th of April and as a b-day present to MYSELF I want to have the best lookin’ abs I’ve ever had.

Here’s what we’re doing:

1) NO DESSERT for the full 30 days. We both have quite the sweet tooth, so this is the biggest challenge for us. Since we both do have such a sweet tooth, we’re doing our best to have really clean “desserts” with my superfoods like raw, Cacao Magic pudding with avocado and frozen banana Green Dream ice cream. It helps, big time! We’re also not doing those every day because that would almost defeat the purpose 🙂 CHALLENGE FOR YOU: give SOMETHING up that makes you feel yucky. High sodium foods, processed or excess sugar, meat, dairy, alcohol. If you really want to drop some weight and feel amazing, drop all of those things and try my 14 day cleanse. I’ll be doing it later this month!

2) morning and evening ab exercises. As I said above, I rarely do specific ab exercises. So we are doing them twice a day to see if it makes a difference. Energy goes where we put it so hopefully it will!

3) 30 minutes minimum of activity every day. Work up a sweat! Take the kids to the park and PLAY with them! Go for a long hike! Turn on the music in the house and do exercises and dance while you clean!

4) we will both be doing the 5 day Philosophie Spring Cleanse on April 15th. I’m so excited: new recipes, new detox bath soak and I always feel SO good after the 5 day cleanse! here’s a video explaining it: http://youtu.be/IaZ43zCe8NY JOIN US!

please share below how you’re doing, what you’d like to see specifically, how I can help, how you’re being challenged, what your goals are… etc! Thanks so much for reading and loving YOU! ❤
